Shark Spotted ‘a Few Yards' From Shore of Cape Cod Beach

A shark was spotted "a few yards" off of Coast Guard Beach in Eastham

A Cape Cod beach was closed for an hour following a shark sighting Friday afternoon.

A shark was spotted "a few yards" off of Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, according to the Eastham Fire Department

Fire officials tweeted the shark alert at 2:42 p.m. Friday.

The sighting comes two days after a Cape Cod harbormaster delivered a dire warning to New Englanders headed to the beach this Labor Day weekend.

"It is time for beachgoers to change their behavior or something terrible is going to happen," Orleans harbormaster Nathan Sears wrote on Facebook. "Please be safe."

Two shark taggings and a shark breaching the water near the shore also prompted beach closures along Cape Cod on Monday.

The National Park Service says beach closures from shark sightings have more than doubled this year, and a 61-year-old New York man was severely injured after a shark bit his leg Aug. 15 off Cape Cod.
