Shell Casing Found at Raynham, Mass. Middle School

Police say nothing suspicious was found during a search of a Raynham, Massachusetts middle school on Wednesday following the discovery of an empty shell casing.

Officers responded to Raynham Middle School around 2 p.m. after a teacher found a single shell casing near the bleachers in the gymnasium and alerted the police department.

Police investigating the incident did not find any other suspicious items while searching the rest of the school Wednesday night.

There was no live round in the shell casing, according to Chief James Donovan.

Officials say there is no reason to believe there is any active threat or danger to the school.

Students were dismissed at the regular time, though all after-school activities were canceled out of an abundance of caution.

Authorities said school would begin at regular time on Thursday and after-school activities would take place. There would be an increased presence of uniformed officers on hand "out of an abundance of caution".

"Whenever situations like this arise we treat them with the utmost seriousness," Donovan said.

The investigation is ongoing.
