Man Dead, 2 Charged After Overnight Shooting Near TD Garden

A man has died after being shot near TD Garden early Saturday morning, police said.

Officers responded to 101 Canal Street just after 2 a.m. Saturday to find a man with gunshot wounds. The victim, 25-year-old Fouad Baghdad, was taken to a local hospital and later died, police said.

A car seen fleeing the area of the shooting was stopped at Canal and Causeway streets, and officials say they found a firearm in the car.

After an investigation, police arrested Bryan Rice, 22, of Boston, and Anthony Baptista-Goncalves, 24, of Boston.

Rice is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and attempted armed robbery. Baptista-Goncalves is charged with accessory before and after the fact to commit murder and attempted armed robbery.

Both men will be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court. It is unclear if they have attorneys.

The shooting remains under investigation at this time.

"Violence has been down across the city," Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said of the incident. "We take every incident very seriously and making sure that we make the proper moves to release any type of activity in any neighborhoods out there and we have to continue to do that every day."

Stephen Zoulalian, a friend of Baghdad's since their says at Boston Latin School, can't believe that his friend is gone.

"[He was] so genuine," Zoulalian said. "Just a great guy and I can't believe he's not here anymore."

August Gammie, another friend of Baghdad's -- with whom he watched the Celtics game earlier in the night -- believes that the suspects sought possession of the chain Baghad was wearing.

"They wanted his chain, they asked for his chain," Gammie said. "I don't know if he said no, or if he tried to give it to them and then they shot him."
