A Massachusetts man arrested in connection in the brutal stabbing deaths of two South Boston doctors last month was indicted by a grand jury on murder charges on Wednesday.
Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley announced Thursday 30-year-old Bampumim Teixeira of Chelsea was charged two counts each of first-degree murder, armed robbery and kidnapping by confinement, and one count of armed home invasion in connection with the May 5 deaths of Dr. Richard Fields and Dr. Lina Bolanos.
Authorities say officers responded to the doctors' South Boston condo on Dorchester Avenue after receiving two calls about an armed gunman in their 11th floor apartment.
Officers came upon Teixeira, who was wearing dark clothing, and thinking he had pointed or fired a weapon at them, two officers shot and injured him, the DA's office said.
The suspect allegedly told officers who were treating his gunshot wounds that another person would open fire on them if they went into the apartment.
He was taken to the hospital, and when police entered the apartment, they found both doctors dead from multiple traumatic injuries. Investigators also allegedly found a black backpack full of jewelry, and near the doorway, a knife and a second bag with a replica firearm and the victims' personal property.
Teixeira was ordered to be held without bail during his arraignment from his hospital bed at Tufts Medical Center on May 8.
