The head of the Rhode Island State Police is assigning additional troopers to enforce seat belt laws.
Col. James Manni says they're taking part in the national "Click It or Ticket" highway safety campaign, beginning Monday. It runs through the Memorial Day holiday weekend, concluding June 2.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives police departments nationwide additional funding to enforce seat belt and child restraint laws.
Rhode Island law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts, and for children to be secured in an approved child seat until they're at least eight years old or meet the height and weight requirements to safely use a seat belt instead.
The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $40. The fine for not using a child restraint is $85.
