Mass. State Police Probe Trooper-Involved Shooting

Massachusetts State Police are investigating a police-related shooting involving a trooper and a suspect on Colonel Bell Drive in Brockton Saturday morning.

The incident was reported shortly before 9 a.m. when the trooper and male suspect identified as Claude W. Brown-Madison, had a confrontation, according to state police.

The trooper fired his weapon and Brown-Madison, a Fall River resident, suffered a leg injury, which police said appeared to be non-life threatening.

A second statement issued later Saturday morning said the incident occurred outside a residential complex and the suspect lives in the area.

"After the trooper shot the suspect and secured him, the trooper rendered first aid to him," police said in the statement. Numerous other troopers and Brockton police also responded to the scene.

Brown-Madison was armed during the incident and pointed a firearm at the trooper. The suspect’s firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting according state police.

"The reason for the initial interaction with the suspect is part of the ongoing investigation," state police said. "The processing of the scene is ongoing."

Brown-Madison was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment under Massachusetts State Police guard. The trooper was also undergoing an evaluation, police said.

Brown-Madison is currently charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, committing firearm violation while having a record that includes at least three prior violent or drug crimes, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm and/or ammunition without an FID card. He will be arraigned when doctors say he is medically able.

The trooper was evaluated at Good Samaritan Hospital and released. The trooper is placed on five days of standard administrative leave per State Police policy regarding officer involved shootings.

The shooting is under investigation by State Police Detectives, Crime Scene Services, and a specialized MSP team of senior investigators that responds to Trooper-involved shootings.

The Plymouth County District Attorney's Office has referred dual parts of the cases to two other district attorney’s offices due to a potential appearance of a conflict of interest. The Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office will oversee the investigation of the shooting and will determine whether the use of potential lethal force was justified under law. The Essex County District Attorney Office will prosecute Brown-Madison for today’s offenses.

This case is still ongoing and more details are to follow.
