Stonehill College Student Killed in Accident Abroad

Linsey Malia, class of 2018, was reportedly involved in a boating accident that resulted in her death

A student at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts died Saturday while studying abroad in Denmark.

According to the Danish authorities, Lindsey Malia, class of 2018, was in Copenhagen Harbor in Brandby, on the outskirts of Copenhagen.

Danish police think a recklessly driven jet ski crashed into the small tour boat Malia was on, killing her and another American student.

Five additional students were injured.

Family member Craig MacInnis said of Malia that "I am going to miss her radiance; that is what I'm going to miss."

He added that, "just Friday I looked at one of the pictures [on Malia's Facebook page] and I said, 'oh my God! What a beautiful smile.' It just lit up the page. She was just a wonderful, down-to-earth, sweet person who just shined."

In a statement from Stonehill, Martin McGovern, Director of Communications and Media Relations, spoke highly of Malia.

"As a peer mentor, a teaching assistant, a member of the Moreau Honors Program, a work study student within Athletics, and a volunteer with multiple campus partners. Linsey was a model student and member of the College community. We ask that the media give her family and friends space as they take time to process this tragedy and grieve,” said McGovern.

A memorial service held at an on-campus chapel late Sunday afternoon was standing room only.
