A University of New Hampshire student has been accused of damaging artwork created in response to several race-based incidents on campus.
Nineteen-year-old Shaan William DeJong was charged with criminal mischief Tuesday. DeJong, a student from Hooksett, New Hampshire, was released on personal recognizance bail and given a July 13 court date. It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer; a phone number couldn't be found for him.
Campus police said the artwork was outside the Stoke Hall dormitory. Last week, hand-drawn swastikas were found on a stairway wall at the dorm. A day later, someone threw a rock at a student of color and racial language was found on a staff member's door in Williamson Hall on Sunday. Police said they were looking for information regarding the incidents.
Last week, hundreds of students confronted the administration over concerns about a worsening racial climate.
