Police Officer Airlifted After Crash in Walpole, Massachusetts

A police officer had to be airlifted by a medical helicopter after a crash Monday in Walpole, Massachusetts.

Walpole police said one of its officers crashed a cruiser around 2 p.m. in the area of 399 South St. The officer was flown to a Boston hospital "for precautionary measures," the department said.

According to police, the cruiser was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

South Street was closed as police investigated the cause of the crash.

Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael told NBC10 Boston the officer, whose identity has not been released, remained hospitalized Monday evening.

"The officer is doing much better than earlier and in good spirits," said Carmichael.

The police chief said state police will investigate the cause of the crash to avoid any conflicts with the Walpole Police Department.
