Interstate 495 reopened Tuesday afternoon after being shut down for several hours in both directions in Westford, Massachusetts due to a transformer fire that resulted in low-hanging electrical wires.
State police said traffic had to be halted in both directions around 11:15 a.m. following the electrical wire hazard.
Footage from NBC10 Boston's Sky Ranger helicopter showed traffic backed up for miles in either direction.
The Westford Fire Department and National Grid responded to the scene. Fire crews will determine if utility poles and wires need to be replaced.
No injuries were reported.
The southbound lanes of travel reopened around 2:30 p.m., and the northbound lanes reopened around 3:30 p.m.
No details on what started the fire were available.
