Driver Hits Minor and Horse in East Bridgewater, Leaves Scene: Police

Andrea Fitzgerald-Rumsey side-swiped a juvenile and a horse before leaving the scene, police say

A Massachusetts woman was ordered to appear in court after a hit-and-run crash involving two minors riding horses in East Bridewater this week.

Police linked Andrea Fitzgerald-Rumsey, 44, to the Wednesday afternoon hit-and-run after she was arrested for allegedly driving on a suspened license. The Whitman woman's SUV had a broken side mirror, consistent with the description of the vehicle in the horse-involved hit-and-run, East Bridgewater police said in a statement Friday.

Officers responding to the hit-and-run call Wednesday on Belmont Street near Summer Street learned that one of the minors riding a horse had been side-swiped by the vehicle's passenger side mirror. The SUV struck the horse's shoulder and its rider's leg, police said, but did not strike another horse being ridden by a second minor.

The driver, later identified as Fitzgerald-Rumsey, stopped to look at the damage to her vehicle before she drove away, police said.

The minor who was struck was later taken to an area hospital with a knee injury, according to police.

Fitzgerald-Rumsey's white Ford Escape SUV was stopped Thursday about noon in Halifax, where state police noticed the broken side mirror, police said. It vehicle matched the description of the vehicle from the hit-and-run on Wednesday.

Fitzgerald-Rumsey was arrested at the scene for allegedly driving with suspended license. Further investigation showed she was driver in the hit-and-run, police said.

Fitzgerald-Rumsey was issued a summons to appear in Brockton District Court at a later date on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a crash with personal injury.

It's unclear if she has an attorney.
