Police say they now believe a report that a woman was stabbed during an attempted robbery in East Boston on Tuesday morning was made up.

The incident was reported around 6:40 a.m. at Bayswater Street and Saint Andrew Road, Boston police said.

A woman told police she was stabbed as three suspects attempted to rob her. She suffered a minor injury to her leg and was taken to a Boston hospital. She is expected to be OK.

Ilir Ymeri, a neighbor, said she happened upon the scene right after the incident occurred.

"I just drove my son around 6:30 to the train," she said. "I was just coming back to take my other son to the bus and I just saw a lady there who was just crying on the phone and I thought maybe she just had bad news from family and I just walked. But on the way back, I saw that the ambulance was here."

Boston police said shortly after 10 a.m. that they now believe the woman made the story up and is suffering from mental health issues.
