Police: Mom Hit 23-Month-Old Daughter With Car in Driveway

A Massachusetts mother who was moving out of a Worcester residence hit her 23-month-old daughter in the process of packing her SUV, according to police.

The unnamed girl was unconscious but breathing when police and paramedics arrived at the scene on Kosta Street Saturday evening.

Thinking that her 23-month-old child was in the apartment playing with the child's 4-year-old sibling, police say the child's mother told them she had gone outside to move her 2011 Toyota Highlander forward in order to not block other vehicles in the driveway.

She allegedly felt a bump after moving forward and immediately stopped, left the vehicle and saw her daughter on the ground. Police that's when she called 911 and started treating the girl.

The girl was taken to a local hospital with critical but stable injuries, including a head injury; however, police say the child's condition has been upgraded to good and is no longer intubated. The girl's mother, who was also unnamed by police, was taken to a local hospital as well by a Worcester police officer.

The Toyota Highlander was impounded by Worcester police for a thorough mechanical inspection. The investigation is ongoing.

The state's Department of Children and Families and the Worcester district attorney's office were also informed of the incident. The child welfare agency confirms it is also investigating.
