A pregnant woman was in critical condition Thursday night and her friend was recovering from serious injuries after a man with 12 prior arrests stabbed them following an argument on a subway train in the Bronx, police say.

The 24-year-old woman and her 21-year-old friend were onboard a 2 train at the Prospect Avenue subway station in Morrisania when they got into an argument with a man, later identified as Derrick Wilson, 50, of the Bronx, over seating on the train, authorities said.

One of the women was sitting on her friend's lap when one of them bumped into Wilson, officials said.

Police said the argument escalated and Wilson pulled out a knife and stabbed the 24-year-old, who officials say is three months pregnant, in the neck and her friend in the arm.

The two women were taken to Lincoln Hospital, where they were listed in serious condition. The pregnant woman’s condition was later downgraded to critical condition, police said. The status of her baby wasn't known.

Witnesses said Wilson tried to flee, but passengers on the train subdued him and held him until police arrived. One witness said the crowd wanted to rough up Wilson, but he eventually talked them out of it.

Wilson was arrested and charged with attempted murder, five counts of assault, two counts of menacing and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.
