Rep. Scalise Released From Hospital, Beginning Rehabilitation

The Majority Whip was injured when a gunman opened fire at the baseball practice on June 14

The congressman who was shot last month during a Republican baseball team practice in Alexandria, Virginia, has been discharged from a D.C. hospital.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was released from MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Tuesday and now will begin intensive inpatient rehabilitation, the hospital said in a statement Wednesday morning.

"He is in good spirits and is looking forward to his return to work once he completes rehabilitation," the hospital said.

The Majority Whip is one of four people shot and wounded by gunman James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old Illinois man who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and income inequality. He told his wife he was headed to Washington to work with "people to change the tax brackets," she said.

Scalise, 51, was struck in the hip. The gunfire damaged internal organs, bones and blood vessels.

Doctors said he arrived at a hospital at imminent risk of death.
