Onetime Trump Campaign Adviser Met With Russian Ambassador

Carter Page declined to say what the discussions were about, citing confidentiality agreements around the event

The latest link between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia is Carter Page, a onetime Trump associate who is reportedly being investigated by U.S. intelligence, NBC News reported.

In an interview Thursday night with MSNBC's Chris Hayes, following the revelation that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, Page did not deny a USA Today report that he met with Kislyak during the Republican National Convention in July.

But another Trump adviser said Page met with many ambassadors at the convention. Page declined to say what the discussions were about, citing confidentiality agreements around the event: "I'm respectful to confidentiality rules, whether it's in government or outside of it."

The questions about Russia come amid scrutiny over contacts with people linked to Trump's administration or campaign and officials in Russia. U.S. intelligence agencies have said Russia was involved in an operation to interfere in last year's election, and The New York Times has reported that they are investigating whether several Trump associates, including Page, had contact with Russian officials during the campaign.

Page denied ever serving as a liaison between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from a federal investigation into Russia's possible interference in the 2016 presidential election on a Thursday press conference. He said his meetings with Russia Ambassador Sergey I. Kislayh in 2016 was not about the Trump campaign, but that he will take the advice of his staff to recuse himself.
