Newest ‘Star Wars' Chapter Revealed in Video Game, Not Movie

The new characters and storyline were created in close partnership with Lucasfilm

The latest chapter in the “Star Wars” saga won’t be playing out in theaters in December. Instead, a new character and story will premiere on gaming consoles in November with the release of “Star Wars Battlefront II.”

In the mythos of “Star Wars,” the tale has always unfolded from the perspective of the Rebellion in the quest to get out from under the Emperor’s thumb. The new video game, available worldwide on Nov. 17 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Origin for PC, flips the action and tells the story of what happened to the Imperial side after the second Death Star exploded in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.”

Iden Versio, leader of the Inferno Squad, battles on the ground and in space in the single-player campaign. Players will also encounter and play as heroes and villains throughout the “Star Wars” franchise.

The new characters and storyline were created in close partnership with Lucasfilm. According to a spokesman from Electronic Arts, the single-player story will be part of the franchise canon moving forward.

“We wanted to create a campaign that told a story we haven’t seen before in ‘Star Wars,’” says Mark Thompson, game director at Motive Studios. “It was important for us to tell a new authentic story, one that gives players a brand-new perspective. By putting players in the boots of an elite member of the Imperial forces, we can show them what the battle was like from the other side.”

The single-player campaign fills in the blanks about what happened to the Empire after its leader was blown up above the planet of Endor. From that explosion to the rise of the First Order, players will experience the action as Iden Versio as she seeks her revenge against the Rebellion.

It will be a different perspective of the battle from the other side over a 30-year period as she and the Imperial Forces regroup after the death of the Emperor.

This isn’t the first time a video game has filled in details between the “Star Wars” movies. In “Star Wars Battlefront,” players could play part of a massive battle on Jakku, the planet where “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” begins.

The multiplayer action is changing as well, providing battlefields from all three trilogies with new areas in Mos Eisley, Starkiller Base, and Yavin 4. There will also be galactic-scale space combat with players inside the cockpits of iconic ships.
