Briefs Flood Supreme Court in Support of Transgender Teen

The filings come after the Trump administration reversed guidance from the Obama administration on transgender bathroom use

Last month, actress Laverne Cox gave a shoutout to Gavin Grimm at the Grammys. Now Grimm, a transgender teen, is receiving even more public support.

On Thursday, briefs flooded the Supreme Court from hundreds of members of Congress and education leaders, as well as human rights activists and other groups. They argued that Grimm and other transgender students like him should be given equal protection under the law, NBC News reported.

The stream of support came after the Trump administration reversed guidance the Obama administration had put in place that said a federal law protected the rights of transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that matched their identities. The Trump administration said the issue should be dealt with at the state level.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments in Grimm's case on March 28, and it will be the first major decision in U.S. history on whether transgender people are covered under sex discrimination law.
