Lawrence Cherono of Kenya has just won the 2019 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in stunning fashion.

The race was tight virtually the entire course, with a pack of four runners sprinting for the finish. Cherono crossed the line victoriously, with his arms in the air in celebration. He then knelt on the ground and prayed.

Cherono said after his finish that he went into the final stretch knowing that it was "no man's race." But he powered through to narrowly win the race.

"I'm happy," he said after crossing the finish line.

Cherono entered this year’s Chicago Marathon as the reigning Boston Marathon champion, and as someone with a consistent record, including seven victories over 14 career marathons.

Chicago's course is chosen by many elite runners due in part to its largely flat route, which paves the way for record-breaking potential.

The 2019 elite field included several men who have run a marathon in less than two hours and seven minutes.
