Celtics Have Interest in Isaiah Thomas Reunion in Free Agency: Report

Report: Celtics have interest in Isaiah Thomas reunion originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

NBA free agency begins Monday at 6 p.m. ET and rumors/reports involving the Boston Celtics are already flying.

One of the most exciting ones, at least from a Celtics fan perspective, comes from longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein.

"Boston, I’m told, has interest in an Isaiah Thomas reunion, with new Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens known to be one of Thomas’ biggest fans," Stein wrote Monday on Substack.

Forsberg: Names that should be on Stevens' free agency call list

The Celtics dealt Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of the Kyrie Irving trade before the 2017-18 season. Since then, it's been hard for Thomas to find consistent playing time. He's played games for five different teams since leaving Boston -- most recently a brief three-game stint with the New Orleans Pelicans last season.

Should the Celtics bring back Thomas? Sure. What's the real downside?

It's not like Thomas would be asked to play a huge role. He could still provide some instant offense off the bench. The 32-year-old veteran also would be good for team chemistry and help mentor some of the younger players.

Boston fans absolutely love Thomas. He was a massive fan favorite during the two-plus seasons he played for the Celtics, including a fifth-place league MVP finish in 2016-17.

The Celtics have been pretty active in roster movement since losing to the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the 2021 playoffs.

They traded point guard Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a deal that included center Al Horford returning to Boston. They've also acquired Josh Richardson from the Dallas Mavericks and reportedly agreed to acquire forward Bruno Fernando and point guard Kris Dunn in a three-team trade that will send center Tristan Thompson to the Sacramento Kings.
