At age 24, Charlie McAvoy already is earning recognition as one of the NHL's top defensemen.

The Boston Bruins blueliner was named to the 2021-22 NHL Second All-Star Team on Tuesday, marking his first postseason All-Star nod. He also finished fourth in voting for the coveted James Norris Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to the league's top defenseman.

McAvoy earned one first-place vote, seven second-place votes, 22 third-place votes, 55 fourth-place votes and 24 fifth-place votes for a total of 358 points. Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar won the award while Roman Josi (Nashville Predators) and Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay Lightning) rounded out the top three.

McAvoy notched 10 goals and 46 assists last season for 56 total points in 78 games played. He averaged 24:39 TOI as the anchor for Boston's blue line.

The Bruins will miss McAvoy's presence for a chunk of the 2022-23 season. He's expected to miss six months after undergoing left shoulder surgery.
