Patriots' N'Keal Harry, ‘Big Brother' Cam Newton Developing Strong Bond

Cam Newton has had just over two months to learn his New England Patriots teammates and far less time to jell with them on the field.

But as far as N'Keal Harry is concerned, the ebullient quarterback is already making great strides in that department.

The 22-year-old wide receiver developed an encouraging on-field connection with Newton in training camp and told reporters Friday he's bonding with his new QB off the field, as well.

"It’s a really good connection,” Harry said Friday in a video conference. “A lot of the time it’s like a big brother, just kind of guiding me through a lot of things. He’s been helping me out a lot.

"Obviously he has a lot of experience in this league, so just having him there throughout camp has helped me out a lot. He’s done a great job of just putting his arm around me and guiding me through this whole thing."

Patriots fans are looking ahead to the post-Brady era.

Harry is entering a pivotal second season after a disappointing rookie campaign in which he caught just 12 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown in seven games played.

The Arizona State product, who slimmed down and focused on his route-running this offseason, should get plenty of opportunities to showcase his new game in 2020, as he's the No. 2 wide receiver behind Julian Edelman on a thin wide receiver depth chart.

Newton apparently has noticed the work Harry -- whom the QB affectionately calls "Doughboy" -- has put in.

"I think he’s made leaps and strides from where he was prior to -- just, I think he has a better understanding of the game," Newton told reporters Thursday. "That’s what you only can expect from a guy, you hope, from his first year to second year."

Harry is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins with a shoulder injury, but if he suits up, perhaps his "big brother" will get him involved early.
