Team USA made up for its slow start on the second day of the Tokyo Olympics, leaping up the rankings in medal counts during the first half of the day.

The majority of Team USA's first medals comes from the pool, where Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland took first and second place in the men's 400m individual medley, with Emma Weyant taking silver in the women's 400 IM. Kalisz' gold was also the first gold for Team USA out of Tokyo.

Lee Kiefer and Anastasija Zolotic made U.S. history as the first Americans to win gold within the women's individual foil match and the women's 57kg taekwondo match. Kiefer also became the first American to ever medal at an individual foil match.

Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan received a standing ovation for her gymnastics performance in what would become her 8th Olympics since her first Olympic appearance in 1992. Meanwhile, siblings Uta and Hifumi Abe of Japan made news of their own when the two became the first pair of siblings to win gold at the same Olympics within minutes of each other.
