Clouds Building Up Before Weekend Rain

Today (Thursday): Brisk sun. Highs in the 40s. Overnight Thursday Night: Frosty and clear. Lows around 30. Friday: Sun to clouds. Highs near 50. (Published Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018)

After an active stretch of weather this week, quiet conditions dominate until our next storm this weekend.

Many areas start the day around freezing Thursday, with highs only warming into the 40s to near 50 during the afternoon. We’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine despite the below average conditions.

Friday will be similar, with a chilly morning starting with lows in the 20s and 30s. By afternoon, we’re again in the 40s to near 50. Clouds will gradually increase over the course of the day.

All the while, a coastal storm will be developing along the East Coast, partially fueled by tropical moisture associated with what was once Hurricane Willa. That storm made landfall in Mexico earlier in the week.

That storm arrives in New England on Saturday with wind, waves, and rain.

Rain will spread up from the south during the morning, quickly becoming heavy at times during the day. On the front side of the system, well north and west, there may be a brief wintry mix as the storm arrives. Expect a widespread of rain 1-to-2-inches in many areas.

Winds during the day will also be strong off of the water. Gusts will be near 60 mph for parts of Cape Cod and the Islands, with gusts closer to 50 mph possible along the rest of the coast. Inland expect gusts more like 30 to 40 mph.

The strong winds will combine with high tides this weekend to result in pockets of minor coastal flooding, especially during the Saturday afternoon tide.

The storm pulls away on Sunday, but we’ll be left with mostly cloudy skies and a few spotty showers and breezy conditions. The wind by then will be turning back to the northwest.

Another weaker system will bring a few more showers Monday into Tuesday before quiet weather returns as we approach Halloween.
