It’s a dreary day from start to finish but there is milder weather on its way.
The region today grappled with a system that brought rain to southern New England, and a messy, wintry mix elsewhere - especially in higher elevations of central and western Massachusetts, southern Vermont and New Hampshire. Snowy weather will continue through Sunday along the leading edge of the system in north and central New Hampshire and interior Maine. Into the afternoon and evening hours Sunday, we will continue to see the rain-snow line wobble north, hopping over the Mass/New Hampshire state line and continuing to slide northward into central NH, and southern VT.
The rain in western Massachusetts and Connecticut will become more scattered by dinner time this evening, as the system releases its grip on the region.
The system pulls off the coastline by midnight with a few lingering showers in Maine, otherwise we’ll have a gradual clearing of the skies from west to east overnight.
In total, 6- to 9-inches of snowfall is expected for north central NH, and NW Maine while farther north areas will see 3- to 6-inches of snow. Farther south, along the Mass/NH border, we'll see sleet and freezing rain mixing in along the MA/NH border. Expect about 1- to 3-inches total in that area. Tonight, temperatures only slide into the low- to mid-30s.
Things look up starting Monday when a dome of high pressure approaches from the southwest and keeps the first half of the work week dry and mild with a southwesterly wind. High temperatures stretch into the 50s through Wednesday under partly to mostly sunny skies. Once we change the calendar from February to March, we also enter into an unsettled pattern. Thursday remains dry for most of the day before clouds take over and showers slide in overnight.
The wind picks up Friday as the system gains strength just off the coast of southern New England. Gusts out of the east could top at 50 to 60 MPH for the Cape, Islands and the immediate coastline could see flooding conditions as this timing pairs up with the astronomical high tides. Rain is expected for most of southern New England Friday, with rain/snow for the higher terrain in central and western MA, southern VT, and NH.

The blustery and wet conditions stick around Saturday, however, next weekend does not look like a total washout. Sunday will likely be drier under mostly cloudy skies. We’ll know more as we get closer.
