Easy Sprinkle Starting Our Morning Breaks of Sun to Come

Today (Wednesday): More clouds than sun with scattered sprinkles and light showers at times. Highs around 60. Overnight Wednesday Night: A round of showers after midnight. Lows around 50. Thursday: Pleasant air, a few showers at times. Highs in the 60s. (Published Wednesday, May 15, 2019)

As recently as 2017, we had very heavy snow in the mountains of New England.

Two years ago on Wednesday, we had a 33-inch snowstorm at the summit of Mount Washington, which stands as an all-time May snowfall record. But something may be a little different this year. Wednesday is the fourth day in a row that it has snowed somewhere in New England.

Right now, it is snowing in the hills of eastern and northern Maine. There is really only one way we can go with the weather pattern now -- that is toward drier and warmer.

Outside of that wintry mix in eastern Maine Wednesday morning, most of us are starting off with mostly cloudy skies with a little fog and drizzle. It is a cold start, but will warm up thanks to breaks of sunshine becoming widespread by mid-day and the afternoon. High temperatures will make it well into the 60s in western Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Most of us we should at least get to 60 degrees. The exception is Maine, where it continues cooler with slow drying. There’s a little bit of energy in the atmosphere so a shower could happen Wednesday afternoon or evening.

The weather system that’s been here for the last two days is lifting out to the east. But a new, weak wave of energy is coming in from the west, and that could produce the late day shower and a better chance for showers during the day Thursday.

Temperatures will run close to seasonable Thursday and Friday in the 60s in many spots, cooler at the coast. The difference is, clouds once again early Friday with a another dose of rain showers.

This weekend is very similar to the last several weekends, where we are right on the edge of a couple of different weather systems. We have pretty high confidence that Saturday’s going to be nice with a good amount of sunshine and a high temperature close to 70 degrees.

Confidence decreases on Sunday as a warm front may approach from the west. We should have at least some sunshine in the first part of the day, but showers may arrive later with a high in the 60s.

We may end up a little bit wet and somewhat cooler early next week. But there are signs we could have our first 80 degrees weather of the season by Tuesday, maybe even into Wednesday if we can keep another front in Canada away, to our north.
