FIRST ALERT: Gusty Wind, Showers This Halloween

Thursday night is one of the warmest Halloween nights on record here in New England.

We have issued a First Alert for wind and rain through Friday morning. While rain has already begun and the wind is on the way for Thursday night.

Low pressure tracking to our west has produced record cold and snow on the backside, but we are on the east side with the wind increasing from the south as showers and downpours move from south to north in waves.

At times it won’t be raining very hard, though we will get fog and drizzle. At other times, it will be pouring outside with deep puddles. This includes through trick-or-treat time with the temperature climbing through the 60s in to the low 70s by evening in parts of New England.

There may be a lull in the precipitation Thursday evening in eastern sections, but then a line of showers and thunderstorms will move through from west to east in the middle of the night and through sunrise Friday. In that line of showers, we may have damaging wind gusting past 55 mph.

A wind advisory, and wind warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service for this event. These expected strong gusts have even prompted some New England towns to postpone trick or treat activities to the weekend.

This front coming through Friday morning will push the warm and humid air out of the region, and the temperature may fall 20 degrees in just a couple of hours from near 70 degrees back to the lower 50s.

Then, we may have a couple of hours with the temperature comes up. Most of us will average about 55 degrees Friday afternoon.

The damaging wind will likely be from the south Thursday night, but even during the day Friday, wind from the west will be gusting past 30 mph. This will allow it to import the cooler and much drier air.

We should have several hours of sunshine Friday. The high-pressure system that brought record cold to the west will be moving south of New England this weekend, with modified polar air. That means we may have a frost each morning, but each day we should be able to get back up into the 40s north and 50s south.

Friday looks mostly sunny for all of New England. But Sunday, we have an upper level low pressure system that will bring in clouds in the afternoon, and some mixed rain or snow showers to the higher elevations west and north.

Another batch of cool but bright weather should come in Monday, with sunshine temperature in the lower 50s.

Election Day Tuesday has another front coming at us with a chance of showers in the afternoon. At this point, it does not look like a big storm. Much colder air will be working in later in the week and for next weekend as seen here in our First Alert 10-Day Forecast.
