FIRST ALERT: Strong Winds, Rain to Dampen Halloween

It will be wet and windy, but at least Halloween will also be warm across New England this year.

That warm-up starts today, with temperatures in the 60s under mostly cloudy skies. There will be some breaks of sun from time to time, but also still a few pockets of drizzle or a spot shower.

Thursday turns wetter, with scattered rain off and on during the day. High temperatures will be in the 60s as southerly winds gradually ramp up, turning steady 10-20 mph.

As kids go trick-or-treating, expect more of the same. Temperatures will be in the 60s with waves of showers, but there will be breaks in the action. Winds will be strongest over the Cape and Islands, where wind gust around 40 mph.

Winds peak overnight, while most of us sleep. At that point expect gusts to 50 mph for parts of Eastern New England, with the heaviest rain as well. In fact, there may even be some thunderstorms along with the downpours.

Expect a widespread 1-2" of rain, with some locally higher amounts possible, especially in Vermont. Southeastern New England will be on the lower end of the range.

Friday starts off very windy and warm too, with temperatures in the 60s to near 70. Any early morning rain will quickly pull away though, as skies clear and winds turn around to the west. That will bring back sunshine and drop our temperatures dramatically. By midday and afternoon we'll be in the 40s and 50s!

A few snowflakes are likely at the end of the storm in the mountains of Northern New England.

The weekend is bright and cooler, with highs in the 50s.

Next week, overall, looks brighter than this week with highs in the 50s. By the end of the week, however, colder air settles in and highs may be stuck in the 40s.
