We had record warmth across much of New England to start the week. But it's back to reality already tonight as lows dip into the 20s for most.

Wednesday will bring back the wintry feel as temperatures will be in the 30s. We start off mostly clear in the morning, then clouding up by evening and tracking in a wintry mix.

We have a First Alert for Wednesday night into Thursday as the wintry mix will make travel icy and slick. Some snowflakes may mix in across Boston late Wednesday night before switching to sleet and freezing rain Thursday morning. The ice accumulation could be about a quarter of an inch across northern Rhode Island, northern Connecticut, the Worcester Hills, and the Berkshires.

A light icing (about a tenth of an inch) is possible around Interstate 95 to Interstate 495, Boston to some of southeastern Massachusetts for a brief time before changing over to rain late Thursday morning.

Light snow accumulation is possible across southern New Hampshire, across the Merrimack Valley, and northward to the mountains. Still some uncertainty on how much sleet will mix in with the snow. This may lower our snow potential for some places. It will be an all rain event for southern Connecticut, Rhode Island and Cape Cod.

The precipitation may linger a bit Thursday afternoon in the form of drizzle with a continued onshore wind. A warm front lifts through New England on Friday morning, bringing another round of scattered rain. It will also bring warmer temperatures near 50 degrees for a brief time in the afternoon. Then a cold front will bring in winter highs for the weekend, low 30s both days and partly cloudy.

Next week we have a couple rounds of winter weather to deal with. We aim to get back to the proper season with highs through the end of the 10-day in the 30s. Monday into Tuesday, a low pressure system passes south, bringing in a snow chance. Then another storm passes just south Wednesday into Thursday. That one may give more snowfall to New England. There is lots of uncertainty with the timing and tracks, so stay tuned to the First Alert Weather Team.
