Frigid Start To The New Year

Cold weather, wind advisories issued to kick of 2018 in New England

    (Published Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017)

A wind chill warning has been issued for northeastern Vermont, northern New Hampshire, northeastern Maine as well as the Berkshires, southern Vermont, and northeast Connecticut, which means wind chills could near 40 below at times. A wind chill advisory has been issued for the rest of New England as feels like temperatures will slip to near 30 below zero.

As the clock strikes midnight for the New Year, temperatures will be in the lower single digits south, subzero north with wind chills between -10 to -20.

The deep freeze continues into the first couple days of 2018, before we finally see a shift in the pattern by midweek. Some spots could reach record-breaking cold New Year’s Day with highs mainly in the single digits to lower teens. Tuesday, we can’t rule out the chance for some ocean-effect snow showers at the Cape and the Islands.

Wednesday brings a southerly flow, allowing temperatures to warm up into the 20s. Thursday brings a coastal system hugging the eastern seaboard. At this point, the system looks to remain out to sea, but we’ll be clipped with gusty winds as well as snow inland, rain/snow at the immediate coastline. As of right now, a couple scenarios are possible with this system as far as timing and location, because if the system goes farther out to sea, we would see less wind, but more widespread light snow, if the system comes closer, we would definitely receive the gusty, damaging winds and the rain/snow line might shift slightly. We are keeping an eye as we get closer. Some lingering snow showers, along with gusty winds, stick around Friday, while the first full weekend of 2018 brings highs into the teens Saturday, back into the 20s by Sunday.

The extended forecast shows a slight warm-up with highs reaching above freezing by the end of the 10-day, so that is the light at the end of this frigid, cold tunnel. In the meantime, stay on top of your weather forecast by downloading the NBC Boston/necn app so you can get updates on the go.
