After yet another unseasonably warm day, we're tracking slightly cooler air to arrive for Friday. One of the systems crossing Canada will swing a weak cold front past New England Thursday night, but most of the energy is going to stay in Canada. We may have a few clouds, and a breeze that keeps us a little warmer. Under fair skies, the temperature cools slowly to the 40s north and around 50 south. Some locations could see some patchy fog overnight, and a quick sprinkle in far northern Maine is possible.

Even though we will be closer to mid-October temperatures Friday, it will still be a gorgeous day with sunshine and high temperatures in the 60s north to near 70 south, with wind from the northwest 10 to 15 mph.

Do not forget about looking up late Friday into early Saturday morning to catch a glimpse of a few shooting starts associated with the peak of the Orionid Meteor Shower. It's likely the shower will peak early Saturday morning before dawn.

Speaking of this weekend, the forecast looks absolutely beautiful and warmer, with highs back into the 70s, under plenty of sunshine and mostly light variable wind.

We could hardly ask for better weather for this time of the year for so many outdoor events, including the big one, the 53rd annual Head of the Charles regatta.

However, with the dry trend continuing through the weekend coupled with the leaf drop, well-below average monthly rainfall, low humidity and gusty winds at times, there is an elevated fire danger risk. Plus, a good portion of southern New England and closer to 40 percent of Maine now under a drought. Thankfully, beneficial rainfall is on the horizon for most of the next work week.

In the meantime, stay tuned for any updates to your weather forecast on the air, online, and with the NBC Boston and necn apps.
