State officials are continuing to monitor the high likelihood of potentially dangerous heat and humidity, according to an update issued early Saturday morning.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency - the state branch of FEMA - sent out a release Saturday alerting residents that an earlier Excessive Heat Watch alert was still in effect. Residents should remain aware of the risk of heat-related illnesses caused by prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, MEMA said. The alert applies to all of Southern New England through the end of next week.

The Framingham-based headquarters are currently operating at "Level 1," or "Steady State Monitoring" for weather conditions and will continue to monitor the forecast and send out additional information as needed. The next update will be released at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

As part of the release issued Saturday morning, the agency sent out some tips for staying safe during extreme heat: https://www.mass.gov/service-details/extreme-heat-safety-tips.

MEMA also included in the alert safety tips for thunderstorms and lightning and NBC10 Boston meteorologist Chris Gloninger reports that late evening thunderstorms in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are highly likely. Damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado are also possible in these areas.
