More Comfortable Temps as Day Progresses

Today (Thursday): Mostly sunny, less humid air arrives. Highs in the 80s. Overnight Thursday Night: Refreshing, cool air. Lows either side of 60. Friday: Bright and quiet. Highs in the 80s. (Published Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019)

It looks like we’re finally done with the sweltering heat wave and dreaded thunderstorms that delivered several rounds of severe storms on Wednesday.

The front first impacted northern Vermont on Tuesday, then much of southern New England Wednesday. There were several reports of damage that included a 73-mph wind gust at Logan Airport, lightning, large hail and flash flooding from Westfield, Massachusetts right into Boston, and north to the New Hampshire seacoast.

Meanwhile, the sun was shining on Cape Cod and the rain completely missed it, same with most of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. So, some of us had inches of rain, and others now have parched landscapes following one of the hottest months of July, or any month, on record.

Our first day of August features continued humid conditions in southern and eastern New England, but less humid north and west. We should all see a good amount of sunshine and just a spot shower or thunderstorm during the afternoon in southern and eastern sections. High temperatures in the 80s.

Wind is light and variable and locally onshore. High pressure from Canada pushes in a little bit more Thursday night, for a more comfortable night of sleep.

Low temperatures will be in the 50s north and 60s south, with lower humidity. High pressure moves out a little bit on Saturday, allowing for a weak disturbance from Canada to generate afternoon clouds and a spot shower or thunderstorm.

It will be warmer on Saturday in communities away from the beach, with high temperatures 85 to 90 degrees. At the beaches, we should be in the low 80s.

There won’t be much change Sunday, with a mix of sun and clouds and a spot shower or thunderstorm. High temperature a little cooler in the lower 80s.

Another push of cooler and less humid air from Canada is here for a beautiful Monday, with a high temperature in the upper 70s to low 80s.

After that, we will see humidity and warmth build back the middle of next week with showers and thunderstorms possible each afternoon, as August continues a warm stretch of weather here in the northeast.
