Last of Sprinkles Departing Region to Reveal Some Sun

Friday: Mix of sun and clouds, sprinkle. Highs in the upper 60s to near 70. Friday Night: Mostly clear, lows in the 50s. Saturday: Early sun, late clouds. Night shower or storm. Highs in the 70s. (Published Friday, May 24, 2019)

We begin the day on the mild side in southern New England with a decent amount of sunshine, but as we move north, it’s cooler and showers continue in northern New Hampshire and much of Maine.

Low pressure in eastern Maine is strengthening as it slides southeast into the ocean. That should take most of the rain with it, but there is a trough of low pressure swinging down from north to south on its backside.

That means clouds return to parts of southern and eastern New England, with a chance of showers. This also calls for some squally wind around mid-day. Most of the day is dry, though.

It was warmer Thursday night and we have cool air coming in, so temperatures are not going to move too much Friday. Highs in the 50s and 60s north, to 60s to near 70 degrees south. Connecticut likely ends up in the 70s with the most sunshine.

It’s a complicated weekend forecast, but for the most part, it is favorable for our unofficial kick off to the summer season in New England.

There are several fronts coming at us, but most are aimed for a nighttime passage. The sky will clear Friday night with chilly readings in the 30s and 40s north, 40s and low 50s south. Saturday morning looks spectacular, with plenty of sunshine and the wind will be near calm.

It won't be the best if you’re in a sailboat race, like Figawi from Hyannis to Nantucket. But it's great for spectating an outdoor activity!

Don’t forget the sunscreen, it's the highest sun of the season now. For Boston Calling, we'll probably have a few clouds mixing in, with a high temperature near 70 degrees.

The next front races in late Saturday day and night, with a round of showers and thunderstorms. They may develop in Vermont before the sun goes down, but for most of us, it’s at night.

There’s the possibility that some of the storms come with damaging wind. It’s another warm front so that means temperatures don’t cool off too much Saturday night, and it sets the stage for a warm Sunday. Though there’s a lot of instability, we'll only have partly sunny skies and a chance of showers or thunderstorms. High temperature near 80 degrees.

Then a cold front Sunday night brings another round of showers and thunderstorms. Memorial Day Monday may start off on the gray side, but we should have a good amount of sunshine with temperatures back in the 70s. Cooler air comes in briefly on Tuesday, but then a surge of warm to hot weather should come in here for Wednesday and Thursday.

Temperatures may approach 90 degrees and there may be some strong afternoon thunderstorms, a sign of the summer season approaching. Stay tuned to our First Alert 10-Day Forecast for the latest.
