Bitter Cold Follows Double Punch Snowstorms

Snow fills in and increases in intensity across southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island by the early afternoon

The first of two snow storms impacted southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island earlier this morning.

Skies will continue to clear as the day progresses. Cloudy skies improve to partly cloudy by the afternoon. Highs will reach into the low 30s south and low 20s north.

Skies will be mostly clear tonight with lows bottoming out to the teens across the interior to the mid 20s along the coast. Tomorrow brings yet another coastal snow storm, this time impacting more of southern New England. Clouds begin to thicken by sunrise as coastal low fast approaches from the Carolina. Snow showers will develop first on the Cape and Islands, beginning around mid-morning.

Snow fills in and increases in intensity across southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island by the early afternoon. Snow falls throughout the day Saturday, heaviest on the Cape and the Islands, before waning around 10pm as the storm center begins to pull away from the region.

Travel is expected to become difficult and dangerous Saturday night across the Cape and Islands as roadways become snow-covered.

Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour (or greater) will help to reduce visibilities across this area to as low as ½ mile. Ocean-effect snow showers will continue across the cape and islands into the night into Sunday morning.

Highs tomorrow will reach into the low 20s north and the mid to upper 20s south. Sunday features mostly sunny skies with an arctic cold frontal passage during the afternoon with highs in the 20s.

There may be a few heavier snow showers/squalls as the front passes across the region. Bitter cold develops across the region Sunday night with lows in the single digits across much of New England to the teens along the south coast. Places like Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard drop below 20 degrees.

Looking ahead into the start of the work week, high pressure located over the Carolina noses north into our area on Monday. Expecting mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 20s and lower 30s south.

Partly sunny with highs in mid to upper 30s on Tuesday with the risk of a snow shower. The risk of showers increases Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the next weather system moves into the region.

Mostly cloudy with showers building as the day goes on Wednesday with highs near 50 across the coastal plains as a warm air mass streams north. Elsewhere will crest into the lower to mid 40s.

A cold front moves through Wednesday night, pushes showers offshore. A high pressure system over the Appalachians traverses east on Thursday, bringing mostly sunny skies and continued highs in the 40s.
