An area of high pressure moves east of New England on Thursday, resulting in a warming return flow from the southwest. Highs reach into the upper 40s to lower 50s today with limited sunshine.
We’re currently watching the potential for some dense fog to develop along the coast Thursday night as the building warm air mass flows over the cold snow pack. Overnight lows won’t get out of the 40s for most.
An atmospheric wave approaches our region Friday helping to set off heavy rainfall and the potential for urban flooding late Friday afternoon into the evening. Showers develop across the area during the morning, with heavier rains holding off until the afternoon for the interior and possibly as late as the evening at the coast.
These heavy rains will cause our snow pack to rapidly melt, resulting in clogged storm drains. With nowhere for the water to go, urban and street flooding is expected, impacting the Friday evening commute. Local rivers and stream bear close watching too with isolated ice jam flooding occurring. High temperatures will reach well into the 50s across the south, with a few locations even hitting 60 degrees, and the upper 40s to low 50s across the North Country.
Cold temperatures will snap back into New England on Saturday, causing precipitation to change to freezing rain. A Flash Freeze is also possible Saturday afternoon into the evening as rapid temperature drop is occurring, impacting roadways and walkways. Our highest temperatures will occur overnight into the morning.
More seasonable temperatures are in store for Sunday as high pressure settles in overhead. High temperatures will be about 20 degrees below the climatological norm for this time of year in the mid to upper 20s.
