Mild and Breezy Saturday Ahead of Wintry Mix

We will at least see some sunshine to start off our Saturday. The sky will go from sunny to cloudy with a high temperature in the 40s north to 50s south, as we get a breeze from the southwest 10-15 mph. Regardless of the cloud cover, it will be a mild, breezy start to the weekend. Changes arrive late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

A strong high pressure is building over southeastern Canada, sliding colder air in at night. At the same time, low pressure moves into the Midwest with moisture arriving in western and southern New England. That creates a clash of air masses on Sunday with low level wind from the northeast and near freezing temperatures, even though upper-level winds from the southwest with clouds warming enough for rain in parts of New England. This means rain could fall into a sub-freezing layer with possible freezing rain in much of central and northern New England Saturday night into early Sunday.

In most of the state of Maine we are cold enough for just snow, changing to sleet and freezing rain late at night. Sunday is expected to be a cold wet day in western and southern New England, but freezing rain only gradually changes to rain in central New England.

In most of Maine, the snow and sleet changes to freezing rain, with plain rain closest to the shoreline. Wind from the south may gust past 50 mph in the south to north oriented valleys of western New England.

At the same time wind may be light from the northeast in Maine. The high temperature spread for Sunday is quite large. We will be near freezing in Maine to near 50 in southwestern New England.

High pressure to our south brings warm and dry weather here for our Monday and Tuesday, with sunshine and a high in the 50s. A cold front on Wednesday comes with a rain or snow shower. Then, we’re already turning the calendar as March begins Thursday.

The extended period looks to contain some wintry weather, so March is likely holding true to the saying, “in like a lion”.
