Pleasant Sunday, Wet Start to the Week

We’re starting off with a thin veil of clouds with sunshine winning out. However, as we head into the afternoon and early evening, the cloud cover will thicken. High temperatures today stretch into the mid to upper 40's with a relatively light wind. The weather remains dry for the AFC Championship game as the Patriots take on the Jaguars, but the clouds that slide in by halftime are associated with a distant system that's bringing a mixed bag of precipitation to the upper Midwest at this hour.

It will be a wet start to the work week as a warm front associated with its parent low pressure over the Midwest, slides in from the west. We’ll start off with scattered rain south, mixed precipitation to snow to the north by the afternoon. These become widespread over the course of Monday afternoon into the evening, so expect to use the windshield wipers in southern New England for the Monday evening commute, and a snow brush in far northern New England. High temperatures Monday range from upper 30's to low 40's south, near the freezing mark north.

For the Berkshires, northwestern Connecticut, southern Vermont, and southern New Hampshire, expect some icy spots late Monday into early Tuesday morning’s commute, so exercise some caution on the roadways during that time.

For Tuesday, the system is still with us, but we see a warm-up across New England, along with strong gusty winds along the coastline. Some gusts could reach 40- 50 mph along the Cape and the islands Tuesday. The warm front lifts northward, draping the rain/snow line into the midsection of Maine, with Bangor likely seeing rain, Presque Isle under snow showers for most of the day.

Another concern for Tuesday is heavy downpours that will set up in southern New England, especially around the Boston-area for both morning and evening commutes. In total, rainfall amounts through Tuesday evening are expected upwards of an inch to an inch and half, with lesser amounts along the Canadian border, as most of the precipitation there will fall as snow. As far as snowfall totals, light coating for the Concord, NH area, 1-3" expected north of Manchester, NH stretching towards Downeast Maine, 3-6" for the northern half of Maine including Bangor, with the highest totals for the Crown of Maine with 6-9" possible through Tuesday night.

High temperatures Tuesday range from upper 40's south, 40's to 30's the farther north you go. On the back edge of this system, expect some scattered snow showers for the mountains and along the Canadian border, otherwise the main focus will be on the drier conditions and the slight cool down back to seasonable conditions. Highs on Wednesday will be back into the 30's for most spots.

Thursday and Friday bring ample amounts of sunshine with highs remaining seasonable, in the 30's south, upper 20's north, with lows into the teens. The weekend brings another warm-up with next Saturday bringing mostly sunny skies and highs stretching into the mid-40's. Next Sunday will be another mild day, but we’ll likely need the umbrellas as a system brings showers across the region and this will likely continue into the start of the following work week.

We’ll know more details as we get closer. In the meantime, stay updated with the NBC10 Boston / necn app.
