A major coastal storm has hit New England, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds. Most of our BIG wind events come from the northwest or northeast. A southeast wind is very rare, but they have happened – during Irene for example when the Commonwealth experienced one of the worst power outages in history. As of 4:30 a.m. Monday, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is reporting more than 260,000 power outages, making this the largest power outage the state has seen since Irene in 2011.

Let’s go over the specifics of the storm:

Timing: Worst of it between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. 40 MPH wind gusts will persist through the day on Monday.

Wind Gusts: 70+ MPH at the coast; 60 MPH inland.

Wind Damage: Power outages and tree damage likely, structural damage possible. Power outages could be scattered to widespread.

Rain: Widespread 2-3 inches, localized amounts of 4 or 5 inches.

Flooding Potential: Flash flooding is possible, especially in urban areas. River flooding is expected to be minor. Coastal flooding will NOT be an issue. We are expecting astronomically low tide.

Once the strong moves out, the power outage threat will continue into the day on Monday. Winds drop (as will the temperatures!) Monday night. It will be beautiful for Halloween with a true Fall feel.
