Showers Moving in Thanks to a Cold Front

Hurricane Michael made landfall on Mexico Beach, Florida Wednesday as one of the strongest hurricanes to ever make landfall in the United States -- a Category 4 storm with winds estimated at 155 mph.

It is the strongest on record to make landfall on the Florida panhandle, It will take days to fully assess the damage, and perhaps years to rebuild.

Here in New England, we had a dose of summer weather, record warmth in the mid-80s Wednesday -- maybe the last such day like that in 2018. We have a new colder pattern on the way.

A front will move in on Thursday with plenty of clouds and some showers in the morning. A steadier rain will fill in from the north and west, bringing periods of rain for all by afternoon, meaning temperatures will be significantly cooler.

The rain north Thursday and south Thursday night – and wind gusts to 40 mph from the south along our South Coast – come courtesy of an approaching front tied to a storm in Canada. However, the frontal boundary will interact with at least some moisture streaming north of Hurricane Michael to enhance rainfall, particularly Thursday night in Southern New England.

Several Boston counties are under a flash flood watch as are many other areas in New England.

Although the cold front tracks offshore Friday morning, as Michael links up with some rain, it will continue on the Cape and Southeast Massachusetts. There, rain totals will reach a couple of inches, rather than amounts of generally under an inch elsewhere.

By Friday afternoon, dry air takes over for all on an active wind, and after a fall-feeling Saturday with a pop-up shower, more chill arrives for a frost as far south as interior Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut by Saturday night!

Showers creep back into the forecast next week in the exclusive Early Warning Weather 10-day forecast.
