Our NBC10, NECN and Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra weather team has declared a First Alert well in advance of the next storm, slated for Wednesday night.

Although Tuesday and most of Wednesday are expected to be dry, bright and quiet, the shot of rain and wind forecast to swing through New England Wednesday evening into Thursday will be impactful for many.

For now, we enjoy crisp autumn air with highs around 60 both Tuesday and Wednesday and plenty of sunshine, though the clear sky will allow for pockets of valley frost deep inland Tuesday night. Clouds increase Wednesday afternoon ahead of the approaching storm, which is a combination of two intense pieces of energy: cold air and energy from the north, diving southeast across the Great Lakes, and warmth with moisture rising north from the southeast United States.

Both energetic disturbances will combine for a quickly strengthening storm center along the southern New England coast Wednesday night, focusing a shot of two to three inches of rain for most between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning and ramping up an easterly wind to gusts over 45 mph for much of eastern New England overnight Wednesday night and over 55 mph in some coastal locales, knocking out power for at least some along the way from eastern Massachusetts to Maine.

Windswept showers and rain continue Thursday, with snowflakes mixing in at higher elevations of both northern and central New England and even a light accumulation in northern New Hampshire, the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and perhaps a dusting from central Vermont to western New Hampshire!

Drier air returns Friday and leads to a pleasant, dry weekend, before another energetic system may deliver gusty wind and warmth with showers next Tuesday in our exclusive First Alert 10-day forecast.
