The storm that’s been bringing strong winds and big waves to the coast will finally ease out late Friday night.

The center of the storm, located 200 miles south of Nantucket, took on some tropical characteristics Thursday night. It’s now officially Subtropical Storm Melissa.

Regardless of the name, the impacts to New England Friday night remain the same. Wind gusts at the coast are still in the 40-50 MPH range, with occasional bands of rain pivoting ashore. Further inland expect gusts up to 30 MPH are also occurring.

Temperatures overnight Friday hold in the 50s, with some areas in the 40s, with thinner clouds in the north.

Saturday morning will feature a lot of clouds, and some left over drizzle or showers. Winds will gust 20-30 MPH early in the morning before diminishing during the afternoon. Some partial sun will develop late in the day Saturday, especially inland. Waves just offshore will be in the 10-20 foot range.

Sunday is the pick of the long holiday weekend, with highs in the 60s and partly cloudy skies.

Monday will still be fairly bright in Northern New England, but we’ll need to watch more clouds in Southern New England as a weak area of low pressure passes by. A few showers are possible far south as well.

After that our next chance of rain arrives with a system Wednesday into Thursday.
