A brief period of snow last evening with a clearing sky overnight allowed temperatures cool back through the 20s, with spots of black ice.
It was a brief warm front, followed by a cold front that caused the little bit of snow. In the mountains it was more than a little bit of snow, a few inches fell at the ski areas.
Now we have high-pressure moving in for a couple of days, initially it's breezy and cool this morning with temperatures below freezing. But by afternoon, parts of southern New England will warm to 40 degrees. With a mostly clear sky, we should be seasonably cold tonight with low temperature in the teens north to low 20s south.
High pressure brings us sunshine and light wind for a short time tomorrow, but by afternoon a breeze will pick up from the southwest and clouds will increase. Highs with be in the 20s north and 30s south.
A more potent warm front will bring some freezing drizzle or snow north, and a few rain showers south tomorrow night into Thursday morning.
Temperature start off in the 30s on Thursday warming up to the lower 50s south and 40s north by afternoon with rain showers, especially north.
A storm that is been bringing welcome rain and mountain snow to California and western ski areas arrives in the east late week. This pattern that causes us to warm up will also end up being wet.

By Friday, the front extends from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico with a period of rain most of Friday, with a high temperature in the lower 50s.
The combination of melting snow and perhaps one inch of rain may result in local flooding. We will also have to watch for ice break up on some of the rivers.
Low-pressure tracks to our north Friday night, with cold air following with air form the north moving in on Saturday. But the front is going to stall along the south coast with another low pressure system riding into New England for Saturday afternoon. That means more rain along the coast, with temperatures near 50 degrees.
But from the Massachusetts Turnpike and points north the air will be colder, and there's a chance for freezing rain inland and for much of New Hampshire and Maine. At the Canadian border it may be cold enough for all snow.
It's a tough call right now on the exact impact of the Saturday event, but either way much colder air is returning Saturday night and Sunday.
The air probably dries out in time for the Patriots game, with temperatures in the 30s.

Wintry chill returns early next week, but it will probably turn active again with more rain and snow by mid week.
