At one point, crews had to pump fresh air into the hole.

Cohasset fire chief Robert Silvia says an 18-inch steel cover that was covering abandoned cesspool had been moved before the man fell in.

The property owner, Will Charles, stopped by to see the old cesspool on Wednesday evening but would not answer questions about the condition of the yard.

"I need to talk to my attorney," said Charles. "Trying to figure out what's going on."
