The man was a 65-year-old resident of Saugus, according to police, who said they believed the man hiked in the reservation. He was looking for something of his that was missing, prosecutors said.

State police detectives responded to the reservation after the body was discovered in a wooded area around 6 p.m., police said.

His body was found by a family friend, part of a group searching for him after he didn't return from home from the reservation. His body was found a few hundred yards into the reservation, adjacent to a formation called Castle Rock. Authorities were working to figure out if the man suffered a fall from the 30-foot rock.

The man had not been identified as of Thursday morning.
