Massachusetts State Police are investigating a crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 495 near the Tewksbury/Andover line late Wednesday night.

Police said there is a probable fatality and other injuries, as a result of the accident.

First responders were on scene and MedFlight was called due to the extent of the injuries.

The southbound lanes of I-495 at I-93, by exit 39, were shut down following the crash. Southbound traffic was diverted onto I-93 southbound.

Numerous state police patrols and units responded to the scene, including collision analysis and reconstruction and crime scene services.

A preliminary investigation reveals at least five vehicles were involved in the crash, and it appears there may have been more than one crash in short succession, according to officials.

The crash remains under investigation.

No other information was immediately available.
