Saugus Officials Consider Action Over Noise From Trash Plant

People in Revere and Saugus have raised concerns about noise from Wheelabrator’s trash burning plant.

Health officials in Saugus, Massachusetts, are considering taking legal action against a trash plant that is drawing complaints from neighbors.

The Wheelabrator facility has gotten so loud that neighbors say they have had sleepless nights. People in the area attended a Saugus Board of Helath meeting Monday to state their cases. Some held signs outside at a rally.

"It sounds like a train or a jet engine starting," Joan Beaton, who has lived nearby for 20 years, said in June.

"It sounds like a whistling noise coming from like a jet engine," added Armen Missakiane, who works nearby.

Wheelabrator says it was making "unavoidable repairs" to a steam turbine, and during that process it had to safely vent the steam that would normally power the turbine into the air.
