Space Heater Safety Tips

Many residents are just hoping to stay warm as they remain without gas service after the Columbia Gas explosions in Merrimack Valley. Officials are distributing space heaters to help them.

With the weather getting colder, people across New England are trying to stay warm in any way possible. For many in Merrimack Valley, where September's gas fires and explosions left households without gas service, that means using a space heater.

The devices pose a fire risk, so be sure to follow these safety tips:

  • Don't leave unattended
  • Unplug when not using
  • Plug directly into wall
  • Don't use extension cord
  • Place on flat, level surfaces
  • Don't put on carpet, tables or furniture
  • Place at least three feet from anything that could burn
  • Make sure smoke alarms are installed
