Authorities said they are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred overnight in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

The shooting occurred around 1:49 a.m. in the Market Street area, the Essex District Attorney's Office said.

When police arrived, they said they found an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was treated on scene by paramedics and then taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he later died.

The district attorney's office identified the victim Monday afternoon as 38-year-old Luis Mendez of Lawrence.

The district attorney's office said the shooting is not believed to be random. A neighbor told NBC10 Boston she woke up to the sound of a verbal argument coming through her window from the street below. When she looked out her window, she said she saw three women by her apartment building.

“I heard at like 2 in the morning that there was fighting, screaming and yelling, and throwing things. I don’t know what they were throwing," Marina Marquina said. "But unfortunately I saw that they were fighting and screaming and saying, 'Leave! Leave! Leave! Before they come!”

Marquina said she was stunned to learn that someone was killed in the incident. Another man who lives in the neighborhood said there are a lot of parties in the area, but didn't know if it was related.

The shooting remains under investigation by Lawrence police, state police and the district attorney's office.
