Messy Winter Storm on the Way

Tuesday night: Clouds increase. Lows in the mid 20s. Wednesday: Snow changing to rain. Highs in the mid 30s. Thursday: Sunny. Seasonably cool. Highs in the low 30s.

A round of snow is likely Wednesday.

The drive into work and school looks fine, with snow starting by late morning. Most areas will see snow at the onset (except for the Cape and the Island).

By 2 p.m., the rain/snow line has moved to Interstate 90, resulting in a wintry mix for wide swaths of New England
The storm will start moving into New England around 8 a.m. on Wednesday
By 10 a.m., most of New England, with the exception of Maine and southeastern Massachusetts, will be seeing snow.
At noon, the snow will be covering most of New England, with a rain/snow line developing on Cape Cod and off of the southern New England shoreline.
By 2 p.m., the rain/snow line has moved to Interstate 90, resulting in a wintry mix for wide swaths of New England
The rain/snow line moves north around 4 p.m. to northern Massachusetts, parts of southern New Hampshire, but it will be slippery in western Massachusetts
Wind gusts moving the rain/snow line more north by 6 p.m., with more rain and less sleet in the mix
Projected snow totals around Boston from Wednesday's storm

With a southerly component to the wind, we will see a transition from snow to rain. By early afternoon that transition line will make it up to Interstate 90.

During the mid to late afternoon it could go just north of Route 2. The exceptions will be the shelters regions of Worcester county, where there could be freezing rain or sleet around.

Most of the precipitation will end by mid to late evening. The highest snowfall totals will be north of Route 2, where 6 or more inches is likely. Even with a change to rain for the Interstate 95 corridor, it could be a messy ride home with locally heavy rain.

Up to an inch of rain is possible. Even if roads aren’t slippery, there could be some big puddles, which could cause you to hydroplane.

Quiet weather will return by Thursday. Temperatures will be seasonably cool with temperatures in the 30s and sunny skies. The weekend forecast looks a little unsettled.

However, the next system will be working with some warmer air (temperatures in the 40s), which would mean mainly rain for the region.
